It may seem strange to be thinking of Christmas in the spring and early summer. However, if you have children home from school during the Easter, half-term or summer holidays you can combine helping children who receive little or nothing at Christmas with entertaining your own brood. Of course, you can fill boxes yourself if you wish anyway.
Operation Christmas Child, The Mustard Seed Relief Mission and other organisations deliver shoeboxes full of Christmas goodies to needy children. Your child's school may already be involved in a project. Why not relieve the pressure of rushing around at Christmas by filling a shoebox or two over the school holidays? The earlier you start, the more time you have to find bargains to pop into your shoebox. You could even fill more than one box.
This year, I've picked up warm hats, gloves and scarves at 50% to 70% off in Monsoon, plus pretty jewellery. Scope had a few cosmetics and bath items following Christmas plus a notebook. I now need to pick up small games, toys, crayons and notebooks plus items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste over the year when on special offer then add a few sweets nearer to Christmas. These need to be well within the consume by date. Most organisations request a donation of around £1.50 to £2.00 per box to assist with transport costs plus a greetings card in each box with a message for the child.
