Beach Safety – enjoy the beach and ensure your family’s safety

If you are planning a seaside holiday, make sure that you and your family know the beach safety rules.

Many beaches around the UK have lifeguards.  To find the nearest to your holiday destination, look at goodbeachguide.co.uk

Remember the F.L.A.G.S. code whenever you are at the beach:

  1. find the red and yellow flags and swim between themBeach safety flags

  1. look at the safety signs

  1. ask a lifeguard for advice

  1. get a friend to swim with you

  1. stick your hand in the air and shout for help if you get into difficulty.

Know what the different flags on the beach mean.

Red and yellow flags mark areas of water that are patrolled by lifeguards.  These are the safest places to swim.

New Supportive Swimwear

If you love the idea of aqua aerobics but have found it uncomfortable because your swimsuit does not give the support of a sports bra, you may be interested in a new range of swimwear, manufactured by Shock Absorber, and available at lessbounce.com.Shock Absorber swimsuit with integral sports bra

This swimwear has an integrated sports bra, so that women can exercise in and out of the water without that embarrassing ‘Baywatch Bounce’.

Selaine Saxby, owner of lessbounce.com and former aqua aerobics instructor is only too aware of the problem.  “Many women at aqua aerobics classes enjoy jumping up and down in the pool – but it is a dilemma what to wear.  Most instructors have seen participants struggle with excessive bust movement in the pool – these swimsuits are perfect.”

The range includes a swimsuit, tankini and bikini.  It is available in sizes 30-38 B-G.  There are 2 styles of briefs in sizes 8 – 16.

The range is available online at www.lessbounce.com in the swimwear section.

Why swim?

Swimming is excellent aerobic exercise for the heart.

The water is supportive therefore swimming may be helpful for those with joint problems (check with your  doctor first if this applies to  you)

Swimming isn’t competitive unless you decide to race.

Swimming can be  an individual, family or social event.

Safety – hopefully we will never need to swim in an emergency situation but you never know.

Baby Swimming.

If  you have a young baby, there are plenty of groups around to cater for helping baby learn to swim. Have a look at the video clips, you may be surprised.

 Learning to Swim

It is important that, where possible, children learn to swim. A young person can feel excluded and embarrassed if all their friends are going swimming and they are unable to swim. Swimming burns calories and is helpful in weight maintenance, plus it encourages heart health. There is also the safety factor of ensuring that children can swim in an emergency. It is obviously important for sports and activities such as sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling.

If you live in the United Kingdom, your local authority may provide free swimming lessons.  Find out where these are available: culture.gov.uk

Adult non swimmers.

If you have never learned to swim or have had a traumatic experience involving the water, you may have a desire to overcome this. Many people learn to swim as adults. The following links may be useful both for adult and children's swimming lessons:

Sweet Memories

Childhood memories of swimming in outdoor pools are shared by many. There are still lido style outdoor pools around, although all too many have been closed.  If you wish to

re-create those childhood memories or just have a swim in an outdoor pool, the following link may help you to locate a lido. Be warned,  the water may be much cooler than an indoor pool.

Aqua Aerobics

Aqua aerobics can be great fun and you normally don’t even have to be able to swim to join in. It can benefit those who are fit and those with certain health problems or recovering from injury. Check with your doctor first, but aqua aerobics is often recommended for those with obesity, arthritis, joint problems,  soft-tissue injury,  heart problems and MS.
The exercises can be fun. They are usually low impact so easier on the joints than ordinary aerobics. Aqua aerobics is fat burning plus encourages endurance. Classes are often to music and involve jumping, kicking plus a few dance movements. Noodles and other equipment may be used to vary the workout.

Aqua aerobics classes are widely available. If you'd like to give it a try check at your local pool.
