Pat says: I enjoy spending time with family and friends, photography, writing for Hubpages and of course shopping. I also puts my accountancy training to use in  volunteer jobs.

I often extol the virtues of learning new things, and going new places.  I try to put this into practice in my life.

My most recent "musical experience" was a concert by a local group called the Archway Choir.  This group do not have auditions; anybody can join if they can attend the rehersals.  The concert was a lively and the best part was that the performers were so obviously enjoying themselves.

In January 2011 I went to the British Museum to see the exhibition “Ancient Egypt: Book of the Dead”.  I thought it was fantastic and have talked about it to anyone who seems to be listening.

The last film that I saw was “True Grit”.  This version is somewhat darker than the original film with John Wayne, but is very beautiful. The girl that plays the main character is brilliant and the film is worth watching for her performance along.

My current project is learning to speak basic Italian; Wonderful Husband and I are having weekly lessons.  A very kind friend has volunteered to teach us.  She has already demonstrated great depths of patience as I struggle to get my tongue around new words.

I have just finished reading “Cloud Atlas” by David Mitchell.

This book begins as a journal written by an American lawyer on board a ship in the South Pacific, in about 1850.

Just as the story is becoming enthralling, it breaks off in mid sentence.  The next chapter is a seemingly unrelated set of letters written in the 1930s by an English composer with dubious morals.

It took me at least 100pages to determine what “Cloud Atlas” is really ‘about’; the over-arching theme is the suffering caused by humanity’s propensity for greed and destruction.

Once I’d realised the underlying message, I was tempted to stop reading.

I’m glad that I persisted because “Cloud Atlas” is beautifully written and stunningly clever.

Best of all, there is a glimmer of hope at the end.
